Nicolaes (Klaes) Molenaer (1626 in Haarlem – 1676 in Haarlem) was a Dutch Golden Age landscape painter and draughtsman.
Biography
Molenaer was born and died in Haarlem, a city in the Netherlands. His father, Jan Mienssen Molenaer was a tailor, who married Grietgen Adriaens. The couple bore eight children.
Three of the Molenaer brothers became painters: Bartholomeus, Jan Miense, and Klaes Molenaer. Klaes became a member of the Haarlem Guild of St. Luke in 1651 and paid dues yearly until 1676. Heavily influenced by the Dutch master Jacob van Ruisdael, Molenaer became known for his genre scenes depicting the daily life of his home in Haarlem. He is most celebrated for his winter scenes.
