Henri Matisse (French, 1869-1954) studied law in Paris until he decided to pursue art making in 1889 and in 1891 studied painting at the Académie Julien and the École Nationale des Beaux-Arts. Matisse was a founder of Fauvism and Modernism and his distinct style is categorized by bright colors and a flattening of three dimensional space. Matisse worked across painting, printmaking, sculpture, and collage and defined twentieth century artwork. His work is included in the collections of the Tate, the Guggenheim Museum, the Museum of Modern Art, and many more.
