BIOGRAPHY

1849-1923
Villeroy & Boch company manufactured beer steins and other vessels and tableware in the late 19th century in Germany. Mettlach was a factory of V&B named after the village it was located in. Each V&B factory designed their own products, and the Mettlach Factory became synonymous with quality and value of the pieces created there. Mettlach’s golden age was between 1885 and 1910.
A large number of artists and designers worked for the Mettlach factory. Including Heinrich Schlitt, Otto Hupp, Fritz Quidenus, Christian Warth, and Johann Baptist Stahl. This Stein featuring crusaders was designed by German Muralist Heinrich Schlitt, one of the most prominent artists of the group. He often depicted dwarves, gnomes, and fairies in fantastical environments.
